Cristiano Ronaldo says he ‘felt betrayed’

Piers Morgan has been accused of ‘not asking the difficult questions’ in his interview with Cristiano Ronaldo after explaining the reason he got the interview was that the Manchester United star ‘likes him’. The 57-year-old has been questioning the Portugal captain about what has gone wrong at the Red Devils with the full conversation set to be released later this week.

Ronaldo’s second spell at United has not turned sour after the 37-year-old fell out of favour with the club’s hierarchy, especially manager Erik ten Hag. He has been desperate to leave Old Trafford since the team failed to secure Champions League football for this season. He originally tried to force through a move in the summer and looks set to try again in January with the Dutchman open to the possibility if a suitable offer is received.

He has been at the centre of controversy during the current campaign particularly after he refused to come on as a substitute late into the 2-0 defeat by Tottenham. He was suspended and forced to train with the reserves in the aftermath of the incident but looks set to face the wrath of club officials again after sitting down with Morgan for a tell-all interview.

Now, the broadcaster has explained how he managed to bag the interview explaining Ronaldo asked him to do it because he ‘likes him’. Leading to suggestions from TalkSport host Laura Woods that he would give the striker an easier ride.

“Are you saying he did it because you wouldn’t ask him the difficult questions?” she queried. “He thinks because you’re his friend.”

However, Morgan hit back, telling the presenter: “Why don’t you wait to see what questions I ask him before you decide whether I’ve lost my journalistic charm?”

The Talk TV host had earlier confirmed that Ronaldo had asked him personally to do the interview due to the relationship that already existed between the pair. The duo have previously spent time together over dinner and have got to know each other’s families.

“Cristiano asked me to do it, simple as that,” Morgan explained when asked how he got the interview. “I didn’t ask him he asked me.

“He’s been thinking about this for a while. It’s no secret that he’s felt and built up a deep frustration about what’s been happening at United in the last year in particular, and certainly this year, and he feels that it’s time to speak out.

“He knows is going to rattle some cages, but I think he also feels that he should be doing this and he knows people will criticise him but he also knows that what he’s saying is true and sometimes the truth hurts.

“He’s been thinking about this for a while and then I got a call. I want to do it now. And I think I think part of the timing for him was the World Cup. Obviously, he’s about to start is with Portugal. They got a very good team. He could have a good World Cup. It gives him a month away from United.”

When pushed on why Ronaldo had chosen him Morgan said: “I asked him this and he said because I like you, which may come as a surprise but actually, there are some people out there who actually like me.”

It remains to be seen how United chose to punish Ronaldo but it looks certain he will face severe repercussions when he makes his return from Qatar.
