Charter passenger flights have resumed out of the Peterborough Airport after being cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
The Peterborough Departures program of BST Vacations (part of the Blowes and Stewart Travel Group Ltd.) had its first charter flight of the season depart Thursday morning from the city-owned airport in Cavan Monaghan Township.
Passengers on the Canadian North Boeing 737-400 headed to New Orleans for a long weekend.
It’s the program’s first departure since 2019. It’s the eighth season for the program.
“The travel industry was one of the hardest hit sectors during the pandemic, so we are thrilled that we have been able to relaunch our Peterborough Charters,” stated Scott Stewart, president of BST Vacations, in a press release.
“We are so grateful for the support we’ve received from the community, the City of Peterborough, Peterborough County and the personnel at the airport. We look forward to an amazing season of travel and exploring.”
There was some local flavour to the flight experience. Continental breakfast and in-flight meals were made to order by the Sobeys catering department on Lansdowne Street. Beer was from Publican House Brewery, including the new Pet Pilsner which supports Our Pet Project, the campaign to build the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre for the Peterborough Humane Society. Spirits on board were from Black’s Distillery in East City, including their Heritage Vodka.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic new safety measures were introduced including contactless check in from the comfort of your vehicle, proper queue spacing, sanitization packages provided to travellers, and COVID-19 screening prior to departure.
Details about future flights are posted at bstvacations.ca/2022-departures/
