Kyle Schwarber #12 of the Philadelphia Phillies argues with home plate umpire Angel Hernandez after being called out on strikes during the ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park on April 24, 2022 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Brewers defeated the Phillies 1-0.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber, a former Middletown High School standout, expressed his frustration with home-plate umpire Angel Hernandez’s strike zone in memorable fashion during the Phillies’ home loss Sunday night to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Schwarber was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the bottom of the 9th against Milwaukee’s Josh Hader. It was Schwarber’s fourth plate appearance of the night. He also struck out looking in the bottom of the 6th.

Schwarber was a free agent who played the 2021 postseason and part of last season for the Boston Red Sox after a July trade from the Washington Nationals when he agreed last month to a four-year deal with the Phillies worth about $20 million per year. Days later, the Phillies added free agent and former Cincinnati Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos.

In January, Schwarber became the first to have his Middies’ baseball jersey – No. 12 – retired, during halftime of a Middletown boys’ basketball game against Princeton that Schwarber attended at Wade E. Miller Arena. In March, Schwarber was among Middletown Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, for his achievements in football and baseball as a Middie in the Class of 2011.

Schwarber homered three times for the Red Sox during the 2021 postseason – one in the American League wild-card win against the New York Yankees, one in the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays and one in the ALCS against the Houston Astros.

Schwarber went along with the “Kyle from Waltham” joke, wearing a Waltham Hawks shirt that was sent to him after an ALCS game and declaring, “I guess my hometown is Waltham now. So, go Hawks.”

“Everyone was asking me, ‘What’s Kyle from Waltham?'” Schwarber said. “I’m like, ‘What?’ I’m like, ‘I’m from Middletown, Ohio.'”
