PETER WRIGHT turned up with fairy lights around his neck but the lights went out on his World Championship hopes.

The Livingston-born ace went down 3-0 to Welshman Jim Williams at the Ally Pally.

Wright, 53, was all over the place for the entire match which ended in his earliest exit since 2018.

He arrived on stage in his usual festive fancy dress and Grinch hair. But his Christmas, ironically, will now be grumpy.

Wright said: “To be honest I don’t know what happened.

“Obviously I was nowhere near good enough to compete against Jim Williams, who is a fantastic player.

“I haven’t got a clue, practice has been going well but I don’t know what happened. Jim was the better player on the day.

“Maybe it would have been a different game if I’d hit one of the doubles to win the second set but I didn’t feel confident of actually getting it to be honest; it was ‘hopefully I hit it’ rather than ‘this one’s going in’.

“I just played terribly tonight and that’s it.”

After the walk-on and nicking pom poms off the dancers, the funny stuff soon ended.

Williams stole the first set with a stunning 124 finish on bullseye, Wright having led by 2-1 in legs.

Typical of Wright he then changed darts after returning to the stage for the second set.

Snakebite was clearly toiling and then missed SEVEN darts to wrap up the second set when leading 2-1.

For the second time in succession he threw it away.

Williams levelled up in legs and then won the second set with double 18 to leave Wright’s World Championship hopes hanging by a thread.

At this stage Wright had missed a whopping 14 darts at doubles.

There was no change in the third set. Williams was not playing at his maximum by any means but the Scot, averaging just 83.87, was soon out of the tournament in the most miserable fashion.
