The question, though, is whether any team will be willing to take a flyer on the 38-year-old Stanley Cup winner considering the significant baggage.

The Blackhawks have not disclosed any specifics regarding the incident that also included a team employee, but a statement released by the team said the player “engaged in conduct that is unacceptable and in violation of both the terms of his standard player’s contract and the Blackhawks’ internal policies intended to promote professional and safe work environments.”

Citing sources at the time, Daily Faceoff reported that Perry’s forced exit was related to an “alcohol-fueled incident.”

Perry released an apology and admitted his “behaviour was inappropriate and wrong,” adding he would work with experts to “discuss his struggles with alcohol.

“I would like to sincerely apologize to the entire Chicago Blackhawks organization, including ownership, management, coaches, trainers, employees and my teammates,” the former Hart Trophy winner said in his apology. “I would also like to apologize to my fans and my family. I am embarrassed and have let you all down.”

The contract termination means Perry is an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.

In 1,273 games spanning 18 seasons, the New Liskeard, Ont., native has 421 goals and 892 points. Perry won a Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007 and has also suited up for the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning in addition to his time in the Windy City.
