Pereira sent off
Matheus Pereira was sent off for West Brom in their crucial clash against crystal Palace with the game tied at 1-1. The Brazilian attacking midfielder was fouled by Patrick Van Aanholt and then appeared to raise his legs towards the Dutch defender.
In the initial incident, the Palace defender barely reacted and was seen jogging away from Pereira calmly. However Sky Sports commentary alerted viewers to the fact that VAR was having a check of the situation.
Referee Paul Tierney was advised to go and take a look of the monitor to check. This has typically been a sign that decisions are about to be changed and this was indeed the case again for the Baggies and Pereira.
West Brom coach Slaven Bilic will feel very hard done by as the contact seemed exceptionally minimal. Pereira will miss a total of 3 matches now. Newcastle United, Manchester City and the west midlands derby against Aston Villa will follow.
Moyes bemoans VAR
VAR was again in focus in yesterday’s match between West Ham and Manchester United. Paul Pogba’s equaliser should not have stood after replays showed a long ball down the right had in fact gone out of play. With the assistant referee failing to spot it, VAR was unable to rule out the goal as the incident is not part of the parameters.
Moyes was not best pleased at the officials missing the ball going out of play.
“I probably had the best view in the house as it went over my head and I was standing about two yards back from the touchline. I was disappointed the linesman didn’t pick it up,” said Moyes.
“Yeah he was looking for an offside but his first job is to see if the ball had gone out of play and he didn’t make a decision on that at all. He made no decision,” Moyes said when asked if the official had looked away when the ball was played.
“The other thing with the offside, what we do have is VAR to clear that up and sort it out if he got it right or wrong. I would have said his first job was to see if the ball went out of play or not and he didn’t do that.”
The loss left West Ham and Moyes feeling very hard done by and further questions being asked of the technology.
