Penguins trade goalie Matt Murray for second-round draft pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded goaltender Matt Murray to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday. The trade occurred in order for the Penguins to gain a second-round pick, 52nd overall, and forward prospect Jonathan Gruden.

Murray signed with the Penguins as a third-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He went on to win two Stanley Cups with the team in 2016 and 2017. As opposed to keeping Murray, the Penguins instead committed to goalie Tristan Jarry, who signed a three-year contract with the organization this weekend.

“We would like to thank Matt for everything he’s done in his five seasons with the Penguins,” said Jim Rutherford, the team’s general manager. “He was instrumental to our back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships, and we wish him the best.”

The Senators, for their part, are excited to bring Murray’s goaltending skills into the fold. With plenty of cap space, the Ottawa team will certainly put to good use Murray’s track record, which includes a .914 save percentage across the five seasons he played with the Penguins.

“He’s a proven goaltender who has considerable high-pressure experience and someone who we’re certain will serve as an exceptional mentor to our young group of upcoming goaltenders,” stated Senators GM, Pierre Dorion.

The newest member of the Penguins, Jonathan Gruden, brings with him a ton of promise as well. The Michigan native comes from Canadian junior ice hockey team, the London Knights, as a left winger. The 20-year-old is signed through the 2022-23 season.

Murray remains a restricted free agent with the Senators.
