Vice President Mike Pence said the Trump administration “rebuilt the military” but offered no specifics how. U.S. military spending did not rise notably under the Trump administration, climbing from $671 billion in the 2018 fiscal year to $704 billion in 2021.

The latest Biden administration budget proposed $842 billion in defense spending in fiscal year 2024.

Former President Donald Trump criticized U.S. military leaders, like Army Gen. Mark Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, particularly in his last year of office, which some military officials believe has eroded public trust in its armed forces.
