Pedro Sánchez could stay PM as Spain appoints socialist Speaker

Spain #Spain

Spain’s socialists have taken a significant step to forming a new government after its candidate was appointed Speaker of the parliament, potentially paving the way for Pedro Sánchez to continue as prime minister.

Francina Armengol, of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ party (PSOE), narrowly won Thursday’s vote, thanks to the crucial support of Catalan nationalists, in what was largely seen as a barometer before a parliamentary vote for a PM.

After an inconclusive election in July and despite finishing second in the national vote, the PSOE is in a stronger position to muster the support required from smaller parties to stitch together a coalition government.

The conservative People’s Party (PP) became the largest party after the July 23 election but did not secure an outright majority
