Pedro Sánchez angers opposition with Morocco holiday

A holiday in Morocco being taken by Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, has been called a “provocation” by the opposition, after he made controversial concessions to Rabat.

Video of Sánchez walking about the streets of Marrakech with his family this week has inflamed politicians of both right and left after he changed a key foreign policy to favour Morocco in spite of a phone-hacking scandal.

The Socialist leader surprised even his own foreign minister when it emerged last year that he had changed Spain’s policy by backing Morocco’s sovereignty claim over the disputed territory of Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony.

The abrupt about-turn by Spain, which previously maintained a neutral position in the decades-old conflict, antagonised Podemos, Sánchez’s far-left government coalition partner, and Algeria,
