Paul Scholes has hailed the leadership within Manchester United’s squad, singling Bruno Fernandes out as ‘a great choice’ for captain.
The Red Devils have been lacking in dominant figures on the field in recent years, a key part in the club’s struggles to challenge for major honours.

However under Erik ten Hag, things have changed markedly.
As well as naming Fernandes as his captain, Man United have brought in two stars in Raphael Varane and Casemiro who have six LaLiga winners’ medals between them, as well as winning the Champions League five and four times respectively at Real Madrid.
Varane has also won the World Cup with France, while Casemiro has won the Copa America with his native Brazil.
In addition to these serial winners, Man United have stars such as Lisandro Martinez, Andre Onana and Christian Eriksen who have all been there and done it during their careers.
While Harry Maguire was stripped of his captaincy over the summer, Man United legend Scholes says that Ten Hag has benefited from the level of leadership within the rest of the group.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube show FIVE, Scholes said: “I know when Harry lost his captaincy, people were talking about Marcus (Rashford) – I never saw that.
“Look, I don’t know him in the dressing room but he wouldn’t be someone who strikes me as being a captain.
“Whereas Bruno has done it, hasn’t he? I think now for the first time, there’s quite a few leaders in the team.

“You think of the experience they’ve got, with the manager they’ve brought in. Varane, a World Cup winner, Real Madrid. Casemiro.
“All of a sudden there are three or four players in that team who are capable of being captain, and I think Bruno is probably the right choice because he seems to be the one they all look up to.”
Scholes added: “He’s done a fantastic job when he has been captain and he looks a leader, he’s the one that’s always having a go, always trying to rally his team. I think it’s a great choice.”
