It was announced on Thursday morning that Steven Gerrard has been inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame – a piece of news that brought plenty of debate amongst fans.
The former England international, who made 504 appearances in the competition, scoring 120 goals, is the first former Liverpool player to be handed a place in the line-up recently launched to celebrate the Premier League’s finest.
Following a combined vote of supporters and a Premier League panel from a 23-person shortlist, Gerrard joins fellow greats Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Dennis Bergkamp and Frank Lampard in the HOF.
There is no doubting Gerrard’s contribution to the competition since making his debut, aged 18, in November 1998. He went on to record some of the finest assists – and goals – in the league’s history.
In addition to his goalscoring record, the midfielder’s influence was highlighted by the fact he won the Premier League Player of the Month award six times.
But the fact that he secured a place in the Hall of Fame before Paul Scholes, who lifted 11 titles [more than any other English player] during a trophy-filled 19-year spell at Manchester United, has got people talking.
Scholes was even trending for the majority of Thursday morning because of Gerrard’s inclusion.

Here is just some of the reaction from social media.
Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer Frank Lampard, who scored 177 goals in 609 Premier League appearances for West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City, was also inducted in the Hall of Fame this week.
