Former Liverpool and Everton prospect Paul Mullin came to within minutes of securing a Wrexham upset as Championship side Sheffield United equalised late on in the FA Cup fourth round.

Hollywood and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, who is co-owner of the National League promotion hopefuls, was in attendance on Sunday evening as they looked to claim another scalp.

They emphatically booked their place in the Fourth Round of the illustrious competition when they overcame Coventry City in the previous round.

Phil Parkinson’s side had to come from behind to overcome the Blades – who came into the encounter 70 places above the hosts – when Oliver McBurnie struck after just over 60 seconds.

Jamie Jones and Thomas O’Connor fired them in front before Oliver Norwood restored parity but the tie swung back in the lower league sides favour when Daniel Jebbison was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident.

But in stoppage time, John Egan ensured that the game went to a replay.

Reynolds has previously expressed his affection for the striker – who featured for both academies in the city – he said: “As quickly as was humanly possible we wanted to dissolve whatever weird barrier there was between us and them.

“And that goes two ways. I’m in awe when I sit there and go ‘there’s Paul Mullin, there’s Aaron Hayden, there’s Jamie Reckord’.

“So I’m a little geeked out as well because I’ve been watching these guys from a YouTube feed from afar. For me, I was stuttering a little with them once I met them face-to-face!”

Mullin was born in Litherland but eventually started his professional career with Huddersfield in 2013. He’d later play for Vauxhall Motors as well as Tranmere before moving to Wrexham in 2021, where he has since scored 60 goals in 77 games.
