Ivan Fears has been one of the instrumental pieces in the New England Patriots’ dynasty over the past two decades.
He spent two seasons as the wide receivers coach before taking over the running back group in 2002. Fears was a part of all six Super Bowl victories and he’ll be around for another potential playoff run in 2021 — but, that could be it for the 66-year-old.
While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Fears openly discussed Father Time and the possibility of retirement creeping ahead.
“I’ll let my body determine that one. That’s for sure,” Fears said, transcribed by WEEI. “The signs are coming quickly. The signs are coming quickly. Ain’t no way in the world I’m moving like I used to. You know that. But inside, I love what we do. I love this freaking job. I love the game. I love being with you guys. It’s exciting to me. It gets me up every day. It’s easy to walk out of the house and show up at 4:30 or 5 o’clock in the morning because it’s fun. It’s fun. I enjoy it. I enjoy being around our players.
“I’ve had a great group of guys in my room. I really have. James [White] and Rex [Burkhead] and all those (guys). I’ve had a great group. And they come in with their own smile and it makes it so goddamn easier to be a part of the day when they’re smiling and ready to go. Those guys work out early in the morning. They get the day started right. I’ve been fortunate.
“I have to be honest with you, I’ve been really fortunate with that. That’s made my job so much easier and a hell of a lot more fun because of the guys I’ve been blessed to have around me. I got a good group now and I’m looking forward to a hell of a year. I really am. Father Time is coming fast. He’s on my back pretty damn good as it goes. But we’ll let that play itself out as we go.”
The Patriots’ running back corps currently consists of Sony Michel, Damien Harris, James White, JJ Taylor, Brandon Bolden and Rhamondre Stevenson. Fears has a solid group along with one of the best offensive lines in the league this year.
