(Bloomberg) — Canadian lawmakers passed a motion calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to add the Proud Boys to Canada’s official list of terrorist organizations.

The motion, which also calls on the government to address the rise of “white supremacist and hate groups,” received unanimous consent in the House of Commons on Monday. If Trudeau moves ahead with the designation, it could open up right-wing organizations like Proud Boys to a range of criminal sanctions.

The move comes after members of the organization participated in the storming of the U.S. Capitol earlier this month, which Trudeau called “an assault on democracy” and “horrifying.”

Canada in 2019 previously banned two white supremacist organizations — neo-Nazi network Blood & Honor and its affiliate Combat 18. Other groups on Canada’s terrorism list include the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram.
