The San Diego Padres took another big step to boost their bid to become a power in the National League by acquiring their third frontline starter this offseason.
According to multiple reports, the Padres reached an agreement to trade for right-hander Joe Musgrove in a three-team deal involving the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets. This trade comes a few short weeks after San Diego acquired 2018 American League Cy Young winner Blake Snell from the Tampa Bay Rays and 2020 NL Cy Young runner-up Yu Darvish from the Chicago Cubs.
As part of the deal, the Mets will receive left-hander Joey Lucchesi, and Pittsburgh will receive five prospects — four from San Diego and one from the Mets. Lucchesi made a combined 56 starts in 2018 and 2019 for the Padres but pitched sparingly in 2020, seeing action in only three games (starting two).
From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.
Among the prospects headed to Pittsburgh is center fielder Hudson Head, ranked No. 7 in the Padres organization. The Pirates will also receive right-hander David Bednar, who saw action in four games for the Padres last season.
San Diego’s opening-day starting rotation appears to be set now with the addition of Musgrove, where he’ll join Snell, Darvish, Dinelson Lamet and Chris Paddack as the Padres look to battle with the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Padres also have talented youngsters Adrian Morejon and MacKenzie Gore and should get right-hander Mike Clevinger back in 2022 following Tommy John surgery.

OPINION: Padres show rest of MLB how it’s done by shoving all chips to middle
Musgrove, 28, was the opening-day starter for the Pirates in 2020, compiling a 1-5 record and a 3.86 ERA in eight starts for a Pittsburgh team that had the worst record in baseball (19-41) in the pandemic-shortened season.
In five seasons — two with the Houston Astros and three with the Pirates — Musgrove has pitched in 108 games (starting 83), compiling a 29-38 record, 465 strikeouts and a 4.33 ERA.
