OU football suffers first loss at Kansas since 1997 & more stats from Jayhawks’ win

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Sooners are no longer undefeated.

No. 6-ranked OU suffered a 38-33 road loss to Kansas on Saturday. The Jayhawks upset the Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) thanks in part to a 9-yard touchdown run by Devin Neal in the final minute.

Kansas strikes first in the opening quarter

86.5: OU failed to convert on a fourth-and-2 at Kansas’ 20-yard line with 4:27 left in the first quarter. The empty trip was uncharacteristic for the Sooners, who had scored on a conference-high 86.5% of their red-zone attempts this season entering Saturday.

6: Kansas’ Ra’Mello Dotson intercepted a pass by Dillon Gabriel and returned it for a 37-yard touchdown with 9:25 left in the first quarter. It marked the first pick-six thrown by an OU quarterback since Jalen Hurts threw a 98-yarder against TCU on Nov. 23, 2019.

45: OU recorded just 45 yards of offense in the first quarter. It’s the team’s lowest total for an opening quarter this season.

0: OU trailed 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. It marked the first time this season the Sooners failed to score any points in the opening quarter.

Sooners surge in second quarter after lightning delay

14: Daniel Hishaw ran for a 9-yard touchdown to give Kansas a 14-0 lead with 14:09 on the clock in the second quarter. It marked the largest deficit OU has faced all season.

57: Kansas held a 14-7 lead with 7:50 left in the second quarter when the game got delayed due to lightning in the area. The delay lasted 57 minutes.

7: Gabriel ran for a 9-yard touchdown that gave OU a 21-14 lead with 4:25 left until halftime. It marked his seventh rushing touchdown of the season, which is a career-high total.

14: Following the rain delay, OU outscored Kansas 14-3 in the final seven minutes and 50 seconds of the second quarter.

OU, Kansas exchange the lead in the third quarter

3: Jalil Farooq fumbled the ball with 3:11 left in the third quarter, and Kansas recovered. It marked the third lost fumble of the season for the Sooners.

38: Kansas quarterback Jason Bean ran for a 38-yard touchdown that gave his team a 26-21 lead with 3:03 left in the third quarter.

2: Gavin Sawchuk ran for a 3-yard touchdown that gave OU a 27-26 lead with 35 seconds left in the third quarter. The redshirt freshman running back has recorded a touchdown in each of the last two games.

Kansas pulls off the upset

2: Marcus Stripling fumbled the ball on a kickoff with 12:25 left in the game, and Kansas recovered. It marked the second fumble recovery of the day for the Jayhawks, matching their season total entering the game.

3: Gabriel ran for a 1-yard touchdown that gave OU a 33-32 lead with 5:22 left in the game. It was his third rushing touchdown of the day, which marked a career-high for a single game.

1: Ethan Downs intercepted a pass with 2:29 left in the game. It marked the junior defensive end’s first career interception.

9: Neal ran for a 9-yard touchdown that give his team a 38-33 lead with 55 seconds left in the game.

1997: OU suffered its first loss at Kansas since its 20-17 defeat on Oct. 4, 1997. The Sooners had won eight straight games in Lawrence.
