Ottawa #Ottawa

OLIVE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Ottawa County sheriff has picked his new undersheriff.

Sgt. Eric DeBoer will take over the job March 3, Sheriff Steve Kempker announced Tuesday.

DeBoer currently works as a road patrol sergeant, a role he has held since 2022. Before that, he spent eight years as a detective. He started as a reserve deputy in 1999 and then became a road patrol deputy in 2001. He graduated from the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Police Academy and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Calvin University and a master’s in public administration from Grand Valley State University.

Kempker touted DeBoer’s “strong understanding of the agency and its related responsibilities.”

“Throughout Eric’s career with the agency, Eric has always displayed the talents, abilities, and skill level for this important leadership role,” the sheriff said.

DeBoer’s predecessor, Undersheriff Valerie Weiss, will retire effective Feb. 28.

“The Sheriff’s Office Executive team and I are looking forward to working with Eric during the transitional period as he prepares to take over the Undersheriff responsibilities,” Kempker said in a statement.
