O’Sullivan taking Penrith lessons with him
Penrith #Penrith
Sean O’Sullivan might be the odd man out at Penrith because he didn’t take to the field for a Panthers side that won a title on Sunday.
But the 24-year-old’s role in their success this year shouldn’t be understated.
The Panthers had a grand day out at Accor Stadium, with their NRL side clinching back-to-back premierships and their NSW Cup outfit claiming the interstate title by beating Queensland side Norths.
It follows the club winning Jersey Flegg, SG Ball and NSW Cup titles last month.
O’Sullivan had been a bit-part first-grader prior to his arrival at the Panthers, but was thrust into the NRL spotlight when star halves Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai were out with suspensions and injury.
But his selection as an unused 18th man for the NRL team made left him a spectator because NRL rules dictate that he wasn’t able to play the interstate game.
“It would have been nice to get on but I’m just so happy for the 36 boys that got on and got their wins,” O’Sullivan told AAP, sporting his own NRL premiership ring.
“I’ve got to be a part of such a special team and club. You tip your hat to all the players and the coaching staff.
“Ivan (Cleary) has always backed me 100 per cent and I’m forever grateful to Ivan for supporting me this year.”
In total, O’Sullivan played 11 NRL games this year and showed he was more than capable of matching it with the best ahead of a move to the Dolphins in 2023.
“Fingers crossed I can win one of these (and get to play in a grand final),” he said pointing to his ring.
“That’s the dream, it’ll be head down, arse up when I get up to the Dolphins.
“I’ve learned so much as a player about what good NRL football looks like and the standard that it takes to be at the top.
“I’m pretty excited for the challenge that lies ahead.”
