Oscars: ‘Barbie’ Grabs Eight Noms, Including Supporting Roles and Two Original Songs

Barbie received eight Oscar nominations for the 2024 awards show.

The film’s nominations include best picture, America Ferrera for supporting actress, Ryan Gosling for supporting actor, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for adapted screenplay, “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” for original song, as well as costume design and production design.

Margot Robbie and Gerwig were snubbed for best actress and best director, respectively.

Gerwig has received several nominations for her work on Barbie throughout this awards season, including from the Directors Guild of America, the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards. She was also honored with the Director of the Year award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The filmmaker was a frontrunner for a director nod on various prediction lists, including The Hollywood Reporter‘s.

Robbie has nabbed multiple best actress nominations for her role as Barbie in the record-breaking box office hit, including from the BAFTAS, the Critics Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, among others.

Ferrera’s nod for best supporting actress was among the notable surprise nominations, while Gosling was expected to receive recognition for his role as Ken.

Two of Barbie‘s hit songs nabbed nominations for best original song: “I’m Just Ken,” with music and lyrics by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt; and “What Was I Made For?” with music and lyrics by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” which was also shortlisted, did not garner a nod, as the Film Academy only allows for two songs from one film to be recognized for the category.

Gerwig and Baumbach’s script was originally deemed original and will compete as such at the Writers Guild of America Awards. However, early this year, news broke that the film would be considered an adapted screenplay at the 2024 Oscars if it were nominated, which it was.

While Robbie wasn’t recognized for best actress, she is up for best picture as a producer of the film, alongside David Heyman, Tom Ackerley and Robbie Brenner, Producers.

The 96th Oscars will air live on ABC coast to coast on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in a new earlier time slot (7-10:30 p.m. ET/4-7:30 p.m. PT), with Jimmy Kimmel returning as host for a fourth time.
