Opening of Mount Pleasant’s ‘midnight massacre’ apartments is set
Mount #Mount
The developer of a once-controversial apartment project in Mount Pleasant will host a grand opening later this month.
Middle Street Partners of Charleston will unveil the 224-unit Atlantic Beach House project Jan. 27 on Ben Sawyer Boulevard, where the former WCIV-TV station once operated.
Construction began on the marshfront site in late 2019 after the town blocked the proposal in 2015, leading to a lawsuit that was settled two years later following a marathon Town Council meeting referred to by some as the “midnight massacre.”
Renters in Charleston might have encountered a little less of a rate hike during the final months of last year, but they are still paying more than the average paid across South Carolina and in the U.S.
The developers scaled down the project as part of the settlement agreement. The three-story, three-building project rises above parking and includes a clubhouse.
Middle Street Partners also is developing the mid-rise 304-unit Atlantic on Romney structure at 45 Romney St. Its Lowcountry projects include the 202-unit Atlantic on the Avenue and the 280-unit Atlantic on the Boulevard, both on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston; and the 316-unit Atlantic at Grand Oaks off Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley. The two North Charleston complexes have been sold.
Middle Street also plans to build the 320-unit Nowell Creek Village on Daniel Island, with plans for two other developments on Clements Ferry Road near Interstate 526.

Van Dyck, one of the club’s founding 50 members, plans to renovate and refresh the club, fitness center, pool area, cabanas, restaurant and café in stages throughout the year. The gym and pool will remain open with normal hours.
“We want to bring life back to the club as it had when it first opened and I have always loved the space,” Van Dyck said. “There will be significant changes to the club that should please new and existing members. We (also) have exciting plans for the restaurant and market.”
Van Dyck is the former owner and founder of Icebox, a creative cocktail catering company, and EventHaus, a firm specializing in custom event rentals.
Extended lease
A government contractor has inked a deal to stay put in a large North Charleston office building.
Property owner Accesso of south Florida said it has signed a five-year lease with Scientific Research Corp., an engineering firm that serves the U.S. government, private sector and international markets. The renewal is for 111,000 square feet in Remount Business Park on Remount Road.
The property, which includes large office layouts and amenities such as fitness and conference centers and security features, is 90 percent leased.
“Given the sensitive nature of our business and our desire for security and space that caters to our specific needs, it was an easy decision for us to renew our lease at Remount I,” said Tim Washington, SRC’s chief operating officer.
Remount I is part of a two-property portfolio totaling 305,114 square feet that Accesso owns within Remount Business Park.
