Ontario reports another 2,336 COVID-19 cases; 6.2 per cent positivity rate — second day of highest rates seen since January 19

Ontario is reporting another 2,336 COVID-19 cases and 14 more deaths, according to its latest report released Tuesday morning.

The seven-day average is at 2,207 cases daily, or 106 weekly per 100,000. Ontario’s seven-day average for deaths is at 14.0 daily.

The province says 36,071 tests were completed the previous day, and a 6.2 per cent positivity rate. This is the second day in a row of the highest rates seen since January 19.

There are 1,090 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, including 387 patients in intensive care. There are 249 people on ventilators.

Ontario has administered 70,645 vaccine doses since its last daily update, with 2,102,380 vaccines given in total as of 8 p.m. the previous night. The province says 313,889 people have completed their vaccinations, which means they’ve had both doses.

Locally, Health Minister Christine Elliott says 727 cases are in Toronto, 434 in Peel Region and 229 in York Region.

Meanwhile, the province is reporting that there were no new deaths in long-term care so the number of long-term care residents who have died stays the same at 3,753.

Ontario is reporting four less long-term-care homes in outbreak, for a total of 50 or eight per cent of LTC homes in the province.

This data is self-reported by the long-term care homes to the Ministry of Long-Term Care. Daily case and death figures may not immediately match the numbers posted by the local public health units due to lags in reporting time.

There are 1800 confirmed cases in Ontario of the highly contagious variant first detected in the United Kingdom, an increase of 51 from the previous day.

There are 69 cases in Ontario of the variant first detected in South Africa, with six new cases reported from the previous day.

There are 90 cases of the variant first found in Brazil, an increase of eight from the previous day.
