Onondaga County sees deadliest week from Covid: The county has reported 63 deaths related to the coronavirus over the past seven days, making an average of 9 daily deaths from Covid-19. That’s more than any other seven-day period since the pandemic began in March.

I really didn’t think I was going to make it: A DeWitt priest has survived a nearly seven-month battle with Covid-19, including five months on a ventilator. At one point he even wrote a goodbye letter to his family. “It was just so scary,’’ said 79-year-old Msgr. J. Robert Yeazel, who served in the Syracuse diocese for more than 50 years.

‘Magic Toy Shop’ star dies: Marilyn Herr, best known for playing Merrily on the Syracuse children’s TV show “Magic Toy Shop,” died Saturday. She was 92. “You all called her Merrily, but to me and my brother she was just Mom,” her daughter Corky Herr wrote. “We shared her with the children of Central New York for almost 30 years, from 1955-1982. She loved doing the show… she may have been acting on the show when she sang and danced, but she truly believed children were a special gift.”

Utica murder victim’s home burglarized, his children’s Christmas presents stolen: Police say burglars stole all the presents Martin Martinez bought for his children on Christmas Eve, a day after Martinez was killed in a shoot-out. Suspects are believed to have chased down a witness and shot at them, the Utica Police Department said.

1 dead, 1 critical after car crash fire: Tyshawn East has died after a vehicle crashed into a utility pole and building and caught fire Saturday morning just outside downtown Syracuse. Another occupant of the vehicle, identified by police as 29-year-old Aeriel Freeman, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police have not yet said who was driving; an investigation is ongoing.

Nate Knight, Elijah Hughes make NBA debuts: Former Nottingham High School basketball star Nate Knight and Syracuse alum Elijah Hughes made their NBA debuts on Wednesday night. Knight, who went undrafted but signed a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks, played five minutes off the bench in a 124-104 win over the Chicago Bulls. Hughes, a second round draft pick, scored three points in Utah’s 120-100 win over the Portland Trail Blazers and Carmelo Anthony.
