Okay, Like, the Grammys Had Some Awkward Moments This Year?

We live in a society… where awards shows are done in a very weird way, and can tend to be really awkward. In a normal year, we get a bunch of celebs in the same room to ham it up together. We have exes running into exes, people fudging their speeches, and Jennifer Lawrence tripping up the stairs. It’s good fun! But in this COVID year, shows like the Grammys have to take a bunch of precautions that make the show safer, but even more awkward. Here are the weirdest moments from the 2021 Grammys.

Lizzo went to present Best New Artist, and it seemed like she had not left her house in a year (which, same) because she seemed both overwhelmed and incredibly excited to present. First, she accidentally said “bitch” on national TV. And then she didn’t know how to open the envelope with the winner’s name in it… chef’s kiss entertainment.

So Meg went up to accept Best New Artist, and her speech was interrupted by an especially large car. She called out the car for interrupting her moment, which was perfect.

Okay, so The Strokes won their first ever Grammy! But the feed cut out as the winner was announced, so they didn’t know they won. They had to ask who won. But it was actually kinda pure??

Taylor’s performance was so good, so it hardly feels fair to even put her on this list, but these six seconds where she was looking for the camera are… kinda funny.

Harry Styles’ speech getting cut for… reasons that are not clear??

Harry accepted his first ever Grammy! Yay! But his speech got bleeped, and there are some competing theories as to what he said. The general consensus seems to be that he dropped the F-bomb when talking (in a nice way) about how great his fellow nominees were.

It was not even clear that Beyoncé would attend the Grammys, so it was hilarious when, while announcing one category she was nominated in, the camera casually panned to her sitting in the audience. Like, Beyoncé’s here!? But also, she and Jay-Z looked perfectly ambivalent to the whole evening, which was great.

When Megan Thee Stallion went up to accept the award for Best Rap Song with Beyoncé, it seemed like Megan didn’t know Beyoncé was there, because she made this face when she saw her across the room.

It was less awkward and more like the purest thing I’ve seen in months, but it is funny to think about being surprised by Beyoncé.

The intro song for every category being way too serious.

For each category, CBS played a little intro music before saying who the nominees were. But the music felt totally off compared to the rest of the vibe of the show, like it was a song from Succession in the midst of a very fun awards show. It was weird!
