After over a week of speculation, Zach Hyman is expected to sign a seven-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers with a cap hit of $5.5 million, leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs after 345 career games.
The Toronto native has spent his entire NHL career in his hometown, recording a solid 33 points in 43 outings this past season. Hyman has put up 185 points and has twice broken the 20-goal mark during his career.
Hyman’s name was one that came up often in regards to free agency with multiple teams reportedly showing interest in the services for the left winger. He has the ability to help the Oilers forward core and is a strong forechecker and adds extra scoring depth in a position that needed the help.
Had the seasons gone the distance, Hyman was on pace to hit 30 goals in the past two seasons. It helps playing with quality players like Auston Matthews, and he’ll have a chance again in Edmonton.
But the overall contract means that Edmonton will be taking on some criticism as well. The Oilers will be committing long-term to a player that has yet to crack the 50-point barrier on a deal that could go into until Hyman is 37 when the deal comes to a close. It might be good now, but what about in a few weeks?
