O’Hara discusses Lavelle impact

It would have made life much easier for the USWNT if they could have finished top of Group E.

But, after settling for second, they must now prepare for a tough Women’s World Cup defence in the knockouts.

As we have mentioned, Sweden are the likely opponents in the last 16.

If the USWNT make it through that, The Athletic’s team of the tournament so far, Japan, look set to meet them in the quarter-final if they can make it past Norway.

A Netherlands rematch might await in the semi-final, unless they are taken out by Spain or Italy on the way.

Then, if the USWNT improve their performances dramatically and make it to the final, it looks like they will have to beat England, France or Germany on August 20 to retain their crown.
