Oakland: Motorcyclist dies in early morning crash on I-580
Oakland #Oakland
OAKLAND — A motorcyclist died early Monday after stopping on Interstate Highway 580 for unknown reasons and being struck by another vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The collision occurred just after 1 a.m. on I-580, just west of the Lake Park Avenue over-crossing, said CHP Officer David Arias. A Dodge pickup headed east on the freeway came upon the motorcycle that had stopped in the second lane without its lights on, Arias said.
The Dodge was traveling at freeway speeds and couldn’t avoid hitting the motorcycle, Arias said. The impact threw the motorcyclist into lanes of traffic, and the motorcyclist was hit by an SUV. Information about the motorcyclist’s age and hometown was not available.
The drivers of both the Dodge and the SUV stopped and cooperated with the CHP officers, who determined that neither were impaired by drugs or alcohol.
