Oak Island, Myrtle Beach among deadliest beaches in the nation, study finds

A new study has revealed two beaches in the Carolinas are among the deadliest in the United States.

A study conducted by the online blog Travel Lens revealed the country’s most dangerous beaches by analyzing factors such as he number of surf zone fatalities, the number of shark attacks, and the states most at risk of hurricanes.

North Carolina’s Oak Island placed eighth with a danger score of 5.54 out of 10. In South Carolina, Myrtle Beach placed fifth with a score of 6.61.

The study said there have been eight drownings since 2010 at Oak Island and two shark attacks.

New Smyrna Beach in Florida placed first with a score of 8.14. Seven beaches in Flordia placed in the top-ten.

According to research, beaches across America can be more at risk of hurricanes than others.

North Carolina ranks fourth in states where hurricanes are most likely to happen. Between 1851 and 2020, there have been 58 hurricanes recorded, with 7 of these classed as major.
