NRL 2022: Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders, live stream, live blog, SuperCoach scores, videos, updates, Nicho Hynes, Tom Starling

Cronulla #Cronulla

The Raiders have pulled off their gutsiest win in years after emphatically beating the Sharks despite losing three players to the sin bin.

Canberra won it 30-10 against a Cronulla outfit that struggled badly with Nicho Hynes playing fullback for the suspended Will Kennedy.

Canberra burst out the blocks as sunshine draped Suncorp Stadium for the first time during the Magic Round weekend.

Sebastian Kris reeled in a bomb after just five minutes to score the opener before star prop Josh Papalii crashed over for the second try.

Canberra halfback Brad Schneider then booted a penalty to make it three from three off the tee before Corey Harawira-Naera scored the third try.

Raiders duo Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Corey Horsburgh were binned either side of half-time for professional fouls. Then Elliott Whitehead went in the 56th minute for a high shot.

Sione Katoa and Royce Hunt scored for the Sharks in the second half and Dale Finucane (head knock) left the game in the 57th minute.

Raiders debutant Zac Woolford set up a try for Schneider before Hudson Young scored at the death.

Here are the three big takeaways from tonight’s clash!

CANBERRA FINALLY HOLD LEAD

The Raiders have blown eight double-digit leads since 2020, which is the most in the NRL, but they held on against the Sharks.

Canberra fans have endured some shocking collapses over the past three years but Ricky Stuart’s men were gutsy from start to finish on Sunday.

They raced out to a 20-0 lead after 27 minutes and this time protected the lead despite losing Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Corey Horsburgh and Elliott Whitehead to the sin bin.

The opening two tries were scored off kicks as Matt Frawley filled in well for the suspended Jack Wighton.

“The Raiders are flying,” Corey Parker said.

“With all due respect to the Raiders, it’s not just the backs to the wall they’ve been known for over the years.

“It will be heartwarming for Ricky Stuart and they’ve done it against a good team.

“It’s been a courageous victory for the Canberra Raiders. 55 per cent possession for the Sharks but the score is 26-10, not a stat you see very often.

“They’ve done it through their sheer desire defensively and off the back of that they’ve been able to play some really enterprising football.”

HALVES DEPTH AN ISSUE

The Sharks new-look halves pairing of Trindall and Moylan lacked any attacking spark in Magic Round.

Nicho Hynes was shifted to fullback due to Will Kennedy’s suspension, but Craig Fitzgibbon will likely be looking for another option next week.

Moylan and Hynes have been one of the in-form halves partnerships to start the 2022 season.

Breaking them up saw the Sharks attacking flare blunted, with the ball somehow ending up in the hands of prop Aiden Tolman in multiple crucial moments.

“They have lost their compass the Cronulla Sharks, they are all going sideways,” Fox league’s Dan Ginnane said.

“This is not the Sharks of 2022 we’re watching here.”

One moment late in the game summed up the Sharks performance in Round 10, with a wayward Moylan pass again hitting the ground.

Trindall attempted to find Hynes on the inside but instead passed the ball straight into Hudson Young’s chest

“This typifies where the Sharks have been, another pass hits the ground,” Corey Parker said.

“It’s not a catastrophe this defeat but it does set them back in terms of top four hopes,” Dan Ginnane added.

“This is the biggest win for Canberra this year.”

Meanwhile, the Raiders were again able to fill the void left by Jack Wighton.

SHARKS SKIPPER BLOW

Dale Finucane has a long history of suffering nasty head knocks.

The 30-year-old has already missed two games this season after being ruled out in the seventh minute of his Melbourne return in Round 6.

On Sunday afternoon, the off-season recruit copped a shoulder to the chin after bouncing off a Tom Starling tackle, colliding with Elliott Whitehead who was sent to the bin.

Finucane was clearly concussed, stumbling to his feet as his teammates held him up.

“Off the back of that he has been absolutely rocked, straight away, can’t imagine that we will see Finucane back, he has a bit of a run of HIAs recently,” Fox League’s Corey Parker said.

Last year in his final season with the Storm, Finucane suffered two severe head knocks, failing his HIA check on both occasions.

Finucane could now be set to spend an extended period on the sidelines if his symptoms are anything like those Ryan Papenhuyzen experienced.

Papenhuyzen copped a brutal high shot from St George Illawarra’s Tyrell Fuimaono in Magic Round last year which kept him off the field for ten weeks.

While the severity of Finucane’s concussion symptoms are still unknown, coach Craig Fitzgibbon will not be rushing his captain back until he is a full bill of health.
