It’s not time to put the winter jackets away just yet.

Much of the eastern United States is enduring a cold front producing severe thunderstorms and heavy rain Wednesday into Thursday and  we’re going to feel it in the South.

Temperatures across the South are forecast to reach as low as 27 degrees Friday, the National Weather Service said Tuesday. These record lows are forecast to be tied or broken across the Deep South, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys.

“It may look like a late April Fool’s prank, but we assure you the chilly temps in Friday’s forecast are no joke,” the NWS Weather Prediction Center tweeted Tuesday afternoon. “Daily records over the eastern US may be broken as lows dip 10 to 15 degrees below normal into the 20s and 30s while parts of the South could experience a late freeze.”

As Wednesday’s cold front brings “bitter and winter-like cold” to the eastern U.S., freeze warnings are in effect across the middle Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys on Wednesday morning, the NWS said. The Southeast, Appalachians and interior sections of the Northeast can expect temperatures 15 to 25 degrees below average with even colder wind chills Thursday, according to the NWS.

“However, the coldest time period is expected to be on Friday morning as a strong high pressure system settles over the Ohio Valley,” the NWS said. The system allows temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic and Tennessee Valley regions to drop in the 20s.

The National Weather Service predicts the following minimum temperatures across the South on Friday, April 2:

  • Tennessee: 27 degrees
  • Louisiana: 37 degrees
  • Mississippi: 34 degrees
  • Arkansas: 33 degrees
  • Alabama: 32 degrees
