Northport police officer injured during traffic stop of Texas man with felony warrants

Update 9:28 p.m.: A suspect has been taken into custody, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Jeremi Johnson, a 32-year-old resident of Cedar Hill, Texas, was taken into custody several miles from the scene of the initial stop.

He was charged with second-degree assault and a hold was placed on him for felony paperwork out of Texas.

A Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s deputy and the Northport officer tried to get Johnson out of the car when Johnson resisted and turned the vehicle toward them and accelerated away.

The officers were thrown to the pavement as Johnson fled, the sheriff’s office said.

The Northport officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Original story: A Northport police officer was injured Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop on a suspect who had felony warrants out of Texas.

Northport police responded at 3:36 p.m. to the 200 block of McFarland Boulevard to assist Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s deputies with the stop, said Assistant Chief Keith Carpenter.

A short time later – at 4:10 p.m. – the male fled in his vehicle and a Northport officer was injured while trying to stop him, Carpenter said. He did not say how the officer was injured.

The vehicle was stopped on Union Chapel Road near Martin Road, and the suspect was taken into custody. His name and charges haven’t been released.

The Northport officer was transported to DCH Tuscaloosa for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the case.
