Captain Tom: Holiday has ‘no connection to covid’ says Wright

Captain Sir Tom Moore raised almost £33 million for the NHS during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and received a knighthood from the Queen for his sensational work. The 100-year-old is currently in hospital having been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Trolls on social media who have criticised Sir Tom for taking a trip to Barbados during the Christmas break when it was legal to do so have been slammed.

Journalist Lebby Evans tweeted: “I interviewed Captain Tom’s daughter before Xmas. She told me how ageist and sexist it was for trolls to assume she was making her dad do things he didn’t want to do.

“Barbados was top of his bucket list and it was legal to go when they did. Some of the comments on here are vile.”

Matthew Wright also defended Captain Tom during an interview on This Morning.

Mr Wright said: “The good news is that he is not in intensive care.

“He has not had the vaccination yet because of complications of pneumonia.

“I think the whole country wishes him well.

“Naysayers say he went on holiday to Barbados but he was allowed.

“Timewise I do not think there is any connection to that and getting Covid.”

Captain Tom has been fiercely defended on social media.

One Twitter user said: “He went on Dec 11th – you were allowed to go on holiday. There was a travel corridor to Barbados.

“As long as people travelled when it was legal, they were entitled to do so.”

Another tweeted: “Sending healing thought to Captain Tom and love to his family and friends. Stay Strong.”

A third wrote: “Let’s hope Captain Sir Tom makes a speedy recovery from Covid.”

A fourth said: “The nation will be hoping and praying that Captain Tom will come through this.

“A national hero and loved by millions.”
