Nine-man Liverpool fall 2-1 to Tottenham after last-gasp Joel Matip own goal in chaotic showdown
Matip #Matip
For the first time in the history of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs have toppled Liverpool at home by a score of 2-1. In a match full of twists and turns and two red cards for Liverpool, it took until deep into stoppage time for Liverpool defender Joel Matip to score the eventual winner for Spurs with a crushing own goal as Ange Postecoglou’s perfect start in charge of the London club continues. Liverpool went down to 10 men in the first half following a questionable sending off for Curtis Jones before the half-hour mark. Spurs followed up with an opener from Son Heung-Min in the 36th minute, but Liverpool were able to answer back to Spurs’ opening goal through Cody Gakpo just before the half, while also having a Luis Diaz goal called back for offside.
An injury to Cody Gakpo and bacl-to-back yellow cards to his replacement Diogo Jota in the 68th and 69th minute left Liverpool with nine men and a seemingly hopeless task. Liverpool fought as hard as they could with nine and looked like they were about to escape with a point, but eventually Spurs were able to push hard enough to get a winner and remain in the top four before facing Luton Town next week.
