Far-right political commentator Nick Fuentes was permanently suspended on Friday from Twitter. A spokesperson from Twitter informed Newsweek the move was made due to “repeated violations” of the company’s rules.

The controversial figure has described himself in the past as an “American nationalist” and a “paleo-conservative,” though others have condemned remarks he’s made as racist and antisemitic.

In February, 2020, Fuentes’s YouTube channel was permanently removed due to what the company cited as “multiple or severe violations of YouTube’s policy prohibiting hate speech.”

Many members of a loosely-associated group of white nationalists who call themselves Groypers are said to be followers of Fuentes. The group is known for various types of hate rhetoric.

Fuentes has also drawn attention recently for praising the January 6 Capitol riots. In a video he posted, he said, “I thought the Capitol [riot] was awesome. It was awesome! And so was Trump. And Trump was awesome because he was racist. Trump was awesome because he was sexist.”

“The only thing Trump wasn’t awesome for was being antisemitic; he wasn’t antisemitic,” Fuentes added. “But the rest was awesome. And people have got to get racist.”

Twitter comments regarding the Fuentes’ suspension have ranged from supporting him, or at least his right to free speech, to people celebrating his removal.
