The rumors surrounding where Erik Karlsson might land continue to swirl.

NHL insider Chris Johnston reported Saturday, citing sources, that the Sharks and Edmonton Oilers have re-engaged in discussions surrounding a trade that would send Karlsson to Edmonton. Johnston notes that there are “considerable” financial hurdles facing both San Jose and Edmonton.

Nevertheless, this is not the first time either side has discussed a trade surrounding the 32-year-old and the two teams continue to explore a fit before the March 3 trade deadline.

Karlsson is under contract for four more years after the 2022-23 NHL season with a no-trade clause. Should the Oilers and Sharks agree to a trade, Karlsson will have to approve it.

In his fourth season with San Jose, Karlsson arguably is having his most dominant campaign yet, which NHL advanced statistics can back up. So far this season, the All-Star defenseman has 17 goals, 53 assists and 70 total points, shooting a career-high as well (12.4 percent).

While Karlsson has been the subject of many trade rumors, especially with the Sharks at 13th in the Western Conference this season, he remains “unfazed” by the noise. Sharks general manager Mike Grier stated on Jan. 14 that he is willing to retain Karlsson if no deal materializes.

It remains to be seen which jersey Karlsson will be donning once the dust settles after the trade deadline.
