Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier has become a target for Bayern Munich and the Magpies could cash in to aid their financial situation.

Despite the riches of their Saudi Arabian owners Newcastle are looking to remain with the parameters of the profit and sustainability rules amid mounting concerns. Spending restrictions have hampered their transfer business and Eddie Howe may have to sell before he can recruit.

Trippier was the first major signing at St James’ Park after the club was taken over, moving from Atletico Madrid for £12million in January 2022. He’s been a stalwart since arriving and has remained a consistent performer, albeit his level has dropped in recent months.

TalkSport though understands that Thomas Tuchel has put the English fullback at the top of his wishlist. The Bayern boss missed out on Kyle Walker last summer and is now ready to target another Premier League player to bolster his options.

A move to the Allianz Arena would see Trippier reunite with Harry Kane, whom he played at Tottenham. The striker moved to Bavaria in the summer with Eric Dier following suit this month. The trio were all part of the Tottenham side that made the Champions League final in 2019.

Newcastle recently posted losses of £73.4million in their latest financial results, which led CEO Darren Eales to confess that the club could be forced to sell players to balance the books. He said: “On any player, at any time, it depends on circumstances. It’s difficult to hypothesis but, if we’re offered £1bn for one of those players, then no-one could argue against that making sense. Any decision we make will always be against the backdrop of the medium to long-term benefit for the club.

The defender is on Bayern’s radar

Boss Eddie Howe echoed that sentiment and said recently: “I don’t think there’s any surprise in that because every football club will have to trade now with Financial Fair Play being such a prominent part of football.

“So selling players and trading is part of what every football club is going to have to do and we’re no different. So whether it’s our top players as you quote, that remains to be seen but selling players and trading will be part of football going forward now I think.”

Other Newcastle players have also been linked with moves away as Europe’s elite consider making huge bids. Bruno Guimarães is seen as the club’s prized assets and would command around £100m with PSG particularly keen. Alexander Isak could also be moved on for a notable profit.
