Newcastle to host Manchester City in Carabao Cup third round

Lincoln’s reward for their penalty shootout success at Sheffield United on Wednesday is a home draw against West Ham, but Manchester City’s trip to Newcastle is the pick of the ties in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Manchester United, the holders, host Crystal Palace. The ties will be played in the week beginning 25 September.

Lukas Jensen was the hero for League One Lincoln in their 3-2 shootout victory at Bramall Lane. After a drab 90 minutes ended goalless, the Imps goalkeeper saved spot-kicks from Sheffield United’s Louis Marsh and Bénie Traoré to send his side through.

Liverpool, the nine-time winners, were handed a home tie against the Championship side Leicester and Arsenal will face Brentford in an all Premier League tie. The top flight’s bottom side, Everton, 2-1 winners at Doncaster, travel to Aston Villa.

Other intriguing ties pitted Chelsea, who had to come from behind to beat AFC Wimbledon, against Brighton and Salford, who beat Leeds on penalties, against Burnley, who won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Zeki Amdouni’s last-minute goal clinched Burnley’s victory. The Switzerland forward, signed from Basel in July, stepped off the bench late in the second half and volleyed home from six yards to settle a largely forgettable tie between two Premier League rivals.

Blackburn, who enjoyed a club-record 8-0 away win at Harrogate on Wednesday, are at home against Cardiff in the next round. Jon Dahl Tomasson praised Blackburn’s academy after the teenage debutants Thomas Bloxham and James Edmondson scored at Harrogate. The second-half substitutes Bloxham, 18, and Edmondson, 17, joined John Buckley (2), Jake Garrett, Sam Gallagher, Dilan Markanday and Zak Gilsenan as Blackburn romped to their biggest victory since 1963.

Tomasson said: “It’s fairly rare to score eight goals in a competitive match and we have all seen before how tough these games can be but we produced a very professional and mature performance … it was a perfect day for the academy with players getting their first minutes and goals for the senior team.”

Fulham, who saw off Tottenham on Tuesday, will host Norwich in the third round, while fellow top‑flight sides Wolves and Luton will travel to Ipswich and Exeter.
