Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles tried to get tickets for Mayweather fight despite Carabao Cup final clash

Aaron Chalmers has revealed that Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles was interested in getting tickets for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr, despite it taking place the night before the Carabao Cup final.

Thousands of Geordies will flock to London this weekend, but the Carabao Cup final is not the only event drawing them to the capital.

35-year-old Chalmers, best known for starring in reality TV series Geordie Shore, will fight boxing hall-of-famer Mayweather at London’s 02 Arena on Saturday night.

The reality TV star-turned-fighter has had seven MMA fights so far, and won his only professional boxing fight. He’ll now look to defeat a man who retired two years ago having won all 50 of his professional boxing matches.

The match is one of the hottest tickets in town, so much so that Newcastle defender Lascelles reportedly considered getting a ticket despite his big match the following day.

On Sunday afternoon Newcastle will take on Manchester Untied in the final of the Carabao Cup, with the Magpies looking to win a piece of major silverware for the first time since 1955.

Speaking to talkSPORT ahead of his fight, Chalmers revealed that he’d heard Lascelles was interested.

“My barber was saying that Jamaal Lascelles was on about getting tickets for the fight,” Chalmers said.

“I’m not sure he’ll be able to get tickets for the fight when he’s got a big cup final the next day. I don’t think that’ll go down too well in the media.

Given that Newcastle have not appeared in a cup final since 1999, it’s some twist of fate that both events are happening on the same weekend.

“I would have bet my house this time last year, me fighting Floyd Mayweather and Newcastle being in a cup final because it would never have happened,” Chalmers said.

“It’s crazy, it’s big for Newcastle. I would 100 per cent take the Carabao Cup and sixth place in the league – any day of the week.”
