Newark Mayor Stu Markham announced Wednesday he will resign from office next month, serving in the role for just 16 months.
Markham, who did not immediately respond to a phone call, did not disclose a reason in his announcement. His last day in office will be Oct. 18.
A city spokeswoman declined to comment on Markham’s resignation, citing personnel matters.

A special election will be set for early January 2024. Deputy Mayor Travis McDermott will run the City Council meetings until a new mayor is elected.
Markham served as a Newark councilperson from 2006 until 2020. He has been a proponent of sustainable development and helped modify the city’s zoning codes.
The mayor did not attend Monday’s City Council meeting, WDEL reported.
The meeting began with an emergency executive session. A unanimous vote from the council led the city solicitor and city manager to take action on the issue discussed in the executive session. None of the details were made public.
