New York Yankees’ Corey Kluber tosses MLB’s second no-hitter in two days, sixth of season

Veteran pitcher Corey Kluber has won two Cy Young awards and has pitched in the World Series, but until Wednesday night he had never thrown a no-hitter in his 11-year career.

The New York Yankees right-hander can now check that box after holding the Texas Rangers without a hit in a 2-0 victory. 

In the year of the no-no in Major League Baseball, Kluber became the second pitcher in as many nights — and sixth overall — to accomplish the feat.

The 35-year-old right-hander threw 101 pitches and struck out nine, allowing only one baserunner — a third-inning walk to Charlie Culberson.

It was the Yankees’ first no-hitter since David Cone tossed a perfect game on July 18, 1999.

Kluber was a member of the Rangers last year, but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in his first start and never pitched for them again.

The Yankees took a chance on him as a free agent, despite the health concerns. And their decision paid major dividends in his first start against his former teammates.

The Rangers also became the third team to be no-hit twice this season.

Kluber now joins an ever-expanding club of pitchers who’ve thrown no-hitters this season — one that includes Joe Musgrove, Carlos Rodon, Wade Miley, John Means and, a day earlier, Spencer Turnbull.

The record for most no-hitters in a single MLB season is seven.
