The UK communities secretary, Robert Jenrick, suggested more areas of England could be placed under tier 4 restrictions to combat the ‘very worrying’ hyper-infectious variant of Covid-19. But Jenrick added it was ‘extremely unlikely’ that new measures would be implemented before Christmas Day.
