New Mexico State continues yearly tradition of handing Hugh Freeze a horrific loss

Hugh Freeze’s first year at Auburn had only been just a bit underwhelming through 10 games.
The Tigers picked up necessary wins against UMass, Cal, Samford, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Arkansas while taking their licks against No. 1 Georgia, No. 22 LSU and No. 13 Ole Miss.
That’s to be expected for a first-year head coach at an SEC school. What’s not expected is for that coach to then watch his team get whooped at home by a Conference USA team in Week 12.
New Mexico State came into SEC’s annual cupcake week to play Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium as 26.5-point underdogs. The Aggies turned the Tigers’ buy-game into a statement victory, winning outright 31-10.
An underdog of at least 21-points by winning by that many points may seem uncommon, but it actually happened not too long ago.
Just last season the very same New Mexico State squad won 49-14 at Liberty — who was also then coached by Hugh Freeze.
Freeze may end up turning things around at Auburn, but he’ll probably have to stop scheduling New Mexico State before that happens.
