KEY POINTS
New leaks about the iPhone 12 Pro models’ display and camera details appeared online, seemingly confirming previous reports about the devices.
Recent reports revealed that Apple is having a hard time equipping the iPhone 12 Pro models with 120Hz refresh rate features, with one analyst suggesting the upcoming smartphones may not come with them. Now, noted leaker Jon Prosser returned with more evidence pointing to the existence of such a feature.
The leaker uploaded several photos to Twitter, proving that Apple is testing the so-called “High Refresh Rate” and “Adaptive Refresh Rate” features on an alleged “production verification testing” (PVT) model of the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.
This comes after display analyst Ross Young said that while the company is able to acquire 120Hz display panels, it is unable to acquire driver ICs needed to enable the high refresh rate. That analyst also said Apple might be able to release iPhone 12 Pro models with 120Hz refresh rate, but it will need to delay the launch further in order to do that.
Prior to his latest post, Prosser encouraged fans not to give up on an iPhone with 120Hz ProMotion display, hinting that the Cupertino tech giant is currently testing the feature on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Display features
Based on one of the images Prosser uploaded, certain iPhone 12 Pro Max PVT models have support for high refresh rates. Models that do not have support for such a feature might display “unexpected behavior.”
Models with support for such high refresh rates can also enable the adaptive refresh rate feature, which works to dynamically switch back and forth between 60Hz and 120Hz, depending on what’s being shown on the screen.
It’s worth noting that the screenshots were taken from a PVT model, which means Apple is still testing the features. The wordings on the screenshots are taken from devices with back-end PVT software, hence the possible errors.
Camera features
The other image Prosser shared also showed some of the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s camera features, including the use of the LiDAR scanner, various video recording modes, a so-called “Enhanced Night Mode” and more.
Previous reports revealed that the iPhone 12 Pro models will feature a LiDAR scanner like the 2020 iPad Pro. This will give the handsets heightened camera and AR abilities. The “Enhanced Night Mode” wording also indicates that Apple might’ve improved on the highly praised Night Mode it introduced on the iPhone 11 series.
