New Barbie movie trailer has Birkenstocks, mugshots and plot details ahead of Greta Gerwig’s much-hyped summer film
Barbie #Barbie
Universe hopping, run-ins with the law and … flat feet?
Warner Bros. dropped the main trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie on Thursday.
The film, based on the iconic Mattel toys Barbie Dolls, begins in a world separate from our own.
Barbie, living the idealistic life you’d expect of Barbies fit with choreographed dances and great music, comes to an abrupt halt when Barbie asks — mid-dance number — “do you guys ever think about dying?”
This question halts the dance number and leads to a series of revelations culminating in a meeting with another Barbie, played by Kate McKinnon, who instructs Barbie (Margot Robbie) to go to the “real world” to know the truth. McKinnon holds out two shoes, a pink-heeled one and a pair of brown Birkenstock-esque sandals asking Robbie’s character to choose whether she wants to find out the truth.
Barbie and Ken then proceed to embark on an adventure of the real world where they struggle to acclimate, have a run-in with the police department and take smiley mugshots.
“Humans only have one ending,” the movie’s voiceover can be heard saying.
“Ideas live forever.”
The movie is set to debut in theatres July 21.
