Nikki Haley’s long-shot campaign to be the Republican presidential nominee suffered an embarrassing blow on Monday night when she failed to win the party’s Nevada primary election — despite being the only viable candidate in the field.
The former South Carolina governor, 52, finished second behind “none of these candidates” on the first night of two ballots in the first western state to choose its nominee. Donald Trump, 77, the overwhelming favourite in the race, will take part in the statewide caucus on Thursday. Unchallenged in that contest, he will secure Nevada’s 26 delegates, adding to those he collected in Iowa and New Hampshire.
