Nebraska’s Tristan Alvano on his ‘next-kick mentality’ — and Omaha Westside’s 56-0 win

Nebraska #Nebraska

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Tristan Alvano’s eyes bugged out. The final score was what?

The Nebraska freshman kicker had just wrapped his first career postgame interview as a Husker when his Friday night got even better. No, he hadn’t heard that his alma mater, Omaha Westside, beat Kearney 56-0.

The factoid was the mere cherry on top of the best college game of Alvano’s young career. Two made field goals from 31 and 32 yards — snapping a streak of three straight missed field goals from 40 yards and beyond — before missing his last chance from 36 wide left into the wind.

“Obviously the last few games when I’ve had my attempts, they haven’t gone as I’d liked,” Alvano said. “But just getting that first one, man, I was fired up after that. It felt great.”

Equally as fun was a kickoff in the second quarter into the wind he intended as a deep ball that hung up, landed between Illinois return men, was recovered by NU’s Grant Tagge and quickly led to a touchdown and a 17-0 lead. Special teams coordinator Ed Foley told the kickoff unit to expect the ball to be in play.

Alvano said he’s been working on his “next-kick mentality” during his uneven stretch. Mechanics, with a “small thing” he tweaked after talking with former Husker kickers Kris Brown and Drew Brown. The psychological side too, when any mistake he makes is easy for all to see.

Friday night’s celebration in the locker room under Illinois’ Memorial Stadium was a reminder of the reward of persevering.

“We were fired up,” Alvano said. “I mean, this staff’s first Big Ten road win. That’s a big deal. We’re happy with it. It would have been a pretty sour taste in our mouth going into a bye week with a loss. We’re thrilled with it, for sure.”
