Nebraska’s defense get ripped for 642 yards against Sun Belt foe Georgia Southern

Nebraska #Nebraska

LINCOLN — Defensive lineman Ty Robinson screamed at any teammate who would listen as the Georgia Southern yardage became a mountain in the third quarter. Nebraska blitzed again and again. Players lifted their arms to a roaring Memorial Stadium crowd.

None of it seemed to matter or make a difference. On a Saturday night that felt like the end in a 45-42 loss, the Blackshirts could too often do little more than watch.

A must-win game against a Sun Belt foe instead turned into an historic night for all the wrong reasons. The Eagles — in their first year as a pass-first, up-tempo offense under a new coaching staff — rolled up 642 yards of offense. The number is the highest of the Scott Frost era and most since UCLA bagged 652 in 2012.

If not for a 98-yard touchdown drive by Nebraska that chewed up nearly six minutes late in the fourth quarter, the final number might have been an NU opponent record. Oklahoma’s 656 from 1956 has stood the test of time through multiple porous Husker defenses.

Nebraska’s current group added its name to the group in forgettable and emphatic fashion.

“Forty-two (points) ought to be enough to win almost every game you play,” Frost said. “But again, we win together and we lose together.”

Despite everything, NU’s maligned group still had one last chance for redemption after the offense provided a 42-38 lead with 3 minutes, 5 seconds left. A Garrett Nelson QB hurry produced an incompletion, then a short completion and run set up a fourth and two. But a blitz didn’t get home as Georgia Southern’s Kyle Vantrease completed a 6-yard out.

A dropped near interception by cornerback Tommi Hill on the next play. Then a 10-yard screen. A few plays later, Vantrease found receiver Khaleb Hood for 27 yards down the sideline over nickel Isaac Gifford. Then a Hill defensive holding call gave the Eagles first and goal.

The final blow was a look the visitors hadn’t shown all night. Vantrease, on second down from the 8, ran in on a designed draw play.

“We just simply didn’t get a stop,” Frost said. “We had a lot of chances to get a stop. We didn’t get a stop. … You can’t give up that many yards and that many points and win many games.”

But that was only the last of the disasters. A self-described “Air Raid” team that ran for 142 yards on 32 attempts (4.4 average) against Morgan State last week churned out 233 on 30 tries (7.8) against the Huskers. Gerald Green accounted for 132 and a pair of scores while fellow rusher Jalen White added two touchdowns on 17 carries and 85 yards. Too often they ran untouched through the middle of the field.

“We don’t have enough eyes on the football right now,” Frost said to the Huskers Radio Network at halftime. “We’re not getting enough hats on the ball. Too many one-on-one tackles and we haven’t made them. I was disappointed in how the defense played — they need to answer the bell in the second half.”

On a cool night with no wind that was ideal for offense, Georgia Southern netted 13 “big” plays — defined as rushing plays of 10-plus yards and passing plays of 15-plus yards. It also consistently dinked and dunked, with Vantrease completing 37 of 56 passes for 409 yards. Last year with Buffalo, the QB came to Lincoln and led an offense that generated just three points and 359 yards.

The quarterback’s passing total marks the most Nebraska has allowed in a game since 455 to Northwestern in 2018. He helped Georgia Southern convert its first seven third downs before finally forcing a stop midway through the third quarter.

The Huskers went sackless on 56 pass attempts.

Nebraska safety Marques Buford snagged a pair of interceptions, marking the first picks of his college career and the first for the Huskers this season. One came on a deep ball in the first half and the other came in the fourth quarter after Nelson hit Vantrease as he threw.

Otherwise? The only stop came to end the first half, when the Eagles ran out of time and a snap infraction caused a 10-second runoff that prevented them from kicking a short field goal. Missed tackles, gaping running lanes and a red-hot Vantrease were continually too much to overcome.

The Blackshirts were again without co-captain and inside linebacker Nick Henrich, who sat out with a right hand injury and gave way to true freshman Ernest Hausmann as a starter. Multiple defensive linemen — including transfers Stephon Wynn and Devin Drew and walk-on Colton Feist — continue to adjust to full-time roles.

There’s nothing left to do but learn from Saturday, Nelson said. Why so many runs were misfit. Why slants and RPO action was relentlessly effective. Why the Blackshirts aren’t the strength they thought they would be.

“Just watch it as a defense, be honest with ourselves,” Nelson said. “And be the hardest critics.”
