The Brooklyn Nets traded Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Dennis Schröder and Thad Young, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Dinwiddie is expected to be bought out by the Raptors, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
According to TNT Sports’ Chris Haynes, the Nets are waiving Harry Giles III following the trade.
There had been strong indications that Dinwiddie wasn’t going to finish this season with the Nets.
Nets Daily reported the team would consider a buyout if they couldn’t find a trade partner before Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline. Dinwiddie responded by denying that was an option.
Dinwiddie’s play over the past month has led to speculation that something might be going on behind the scenes. He’s only averaging 9.1 points per game on 38.0 percent shooting in 14 starts since Jan. 7.
Lucas Kaplan of Nets Daily noted on Jan. 19 that Dinwiddie’s role within the offense had changed to one that was “decidedly secondary” to Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas.
Dinwiddie averaged 11.5 field-goal attempts per game in his first 34 starts of the season. That figure dropped to 7.7 attempts per game in his last 14 starts.
Schröder will presumably start for the Nets, though his role could change if Ben Simmons starts to increase his playing time now that he’s healthy. The 30-year-old is under contract through next season with a $13 million salary in 2024-25.
In 51 appearances for the Raptors, Schröder is averaging 13.7 points and 6.1 assists per game.
Young will be a rotation player behind Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith. He’s averaging 5.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in 23 appearances this season.
