National Fried Scallop Day: where to get yours on the SouthCoast

There couldn’t be a more perfect national day for New Bedford than National Fried Scallop Day! Scallops straight from the boat are a delicacy to the SouthCoast and they are a favorite among people of all ages. This makes National Fried Scallop Day on Oct. 2 a day to celebrate those glorious nuggets from the sea.

You can get them prepared in many different ways and put them in a variety of dishes, but there’s something about having them battered and perfectly fried that just hits the spot.

Fried scallops are sold all over the area but here are a few spots worth checking out in the Greater New Bedford area:

Dig into a heaping portion of New Bedford Sea Scallops, lightly battered and deep-fried golden on a platter with house slaw, French fries, and tartar sauce for $22.99; or get a pint of New Bedford scallops deep-fried and loaded into a grilled hot dog roll, fries and tartar on the side for $19.99. Located at 989 Victoria St., New Bedford.

It’s time to indulge in the Scallop and Pork Belly at Cork Wine and Tapas. You get deep-fried New Bedford scallops on top of crispy pork belly topped with peach bourbon drizzle for $24. This delight is located at 90 Front St., New Bedford.

At 736 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford the scallops are fried to golden brown perfection. Get the New Bedford Fried Scallop plate with fresh Atlantic scallops lightly fried and served with fries and coleslaw for $ 24.99; or the Fisherman’s Platter with fried or grilled fresh cod, scallops, shrimp, and clams (not available grilled) served with French fries and coleslaw for $32.99.

Celebrate the holiday at Turk’s, 83 Marion Road, Mattapoisett. You can order with either the Seafood Platter with haddock, clams, scallops, and shrimp served with coleslaw and a choice of potato for $35.99 or the Fish Combo with one piece of haddock with choice of scallops, shrimp, or clams served with coleslaw and choice of potato for $22.99.

You can’t go wrong with getting your scallops at Genes, 146 Huttleston Ave., Fairhaven. Try the Scallop Plate served with French fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce for $23.95. or get the Fried Scallop Roll with French Fries for $17.95.

The Seafood Hut has Scallops for every size appetite with a small scallops plate and a large scallop plate both are served with with French fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce. Order the large for $22.50 and get 9 ounces of scallops; order the small for $18.99 and get 6 ounces of scallops. Whatever the size the taste is still delicious at 2 S Main St., Acushnet.

For the ultimate meal get the Titanic Seafood Platter, a platter of sweet, whole-belly Ipswich clams, New Bedford sea scallops, a half-pint of fried calamari, ¼ lb. beer-battered fresh haddock, six large shrimp, two clam cakes, colossal onion rings, a double side of French fries, homemade coleslaw, tartar, cocktail sauce and a  spicy dip for $49.48. It takes two to make a dish perfect and none quite like the Scallop and Clam Plate at Knuckle Heads. Get both fired perfectly with fresh-cut fries for market price. You don’t want to miss out on the seafood at the Galley Grille, 66 State Road, Westport. Make sure to try the New Bedford Sea Scallops fried or baked with tartar sauce and your choice of two sides for $32.

Turn National Fried Scallop Day into a date night at  Portas Da Cidade, 231 State Road, Westport. You will want to order the Fried Scallop Plate of course! Local Fresh Scallops lightly battered served with French fries and onion rings for $25.99.
