Nancy Pelosi should be excommunicated from the Catholic Church

Nancy Pelosi likes to be thought of as a Catholic.

Like the Pharisees of old, she conspicuously attends Catholic churches for mass (at least, in places where she hasn’t been banned) and promotes the fact that she is Catholic whenever an opportunity presents itself. But given her actions, words, and defiance of the Pope, she has constantly shown her true colors. She is more interested in the church serving her than she is in serving the church.

Given her public disobedience of Catholic teaching on such basic matters as the value of innocent human life, she should be excommunicated from the Catholic Church.

Pelosi has repeatedly supported and promoted the extermination of babies throughout her political career. Finally, after years of her public advocacy, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone forbade her from receiving Holy Communion at San Francisco parishes last year. Pelosi’s pro-abortion stance was so controversial and fundamentally wrong the Church could no longer remain silent.

“A Catholic legislator who supports procured abortion, after knowing the teaching of the Church, commits a manifestly grave sin which is a cause of most serious scandal to others,” Cordileone wrote in a letter in May 2022.

Now, Pelosi revealed she wants to defy Catholicism again. Just this week, the former Speaker of the House called for the Church to have female priests. Despite fundamental Catholic principles stating the opposite, Pelosi believes she is above the church and wants to reshape it to fit her ideologies. Even more disturbing, a desire for “power” was her motive.

“Every day [priests] have the power … of turning bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ,” Pelosi stated last week during an event at Georgetown University. “That is real power, now we’re talking power, and that’s why I was more attracted to that than being a nun. On the other hand, maybe women will be able to do that as well, that’s something to think about, something I was hoping the pope would do.”

Of course, Jesus, although very close to certain women, chose 12 male apostles, which is the basis of the Catholic Church’s all-male priesthood. But perhaps more interesting is the similarity between Pelosi’s fascination with the “power” of the sacraments and that of a character from the Acts of the Apostles, Simon the magician.

Simon, impressed by the apostles’ conferring the Holy Spirit upon believers through the laying on of hands, offered money in exchange for this ability:

When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”

Simon Magus’s greater sin was to offer money in exchange for priestly powers, and so the sin of paying for sacramental power was thereafter known as “simony.” But Simon’s crass regard for a sacrament as if it were merely “power” is what he shares in common with the former House speaker.

Followers of Christ don’t seek power over other believers — they seek to serve them. Jesus had to make this clear to the apostles repeatedly when they started arguing over who was greatest among them:

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them. It shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave — just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Pelosi might be better off starting a new religion where she is the center of worship — where she can exercise all the power she wants.

Jesus never cared about earthly power, and Pelosi doesn’t care about Jesus. She probably needs a divorce from the Catholic Church.
